Following Jesus: I Surrender All

“We can only learn to know ourselves and do what we can – namely, surrender our will and fulfill God's will in us.”
–Saint Teresa of Avila

There’s a very old but popular hymn that I often love to sing. And the chorus of that hymn goes like this:

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee, my blessed Savior
I surrender all
I Surrender All by Judson W. Van DeVenter

Simple lines. A powerful dedication. Every time the hymn is sung at church, I go all out and declare once again my allegiance to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I often wonder to myself if anyone else is singing along with me. And if they are, do they really believe in what they’re singing? These are some really powerful words of dedication and surrender. I can’t help but wonder if people really want to surrender their entire lives to Jesus.

Do we really want to surrender it all to our blessed Savior?

Surrender our convenience and our comfort?
Surrender our time and our money?
Surrender our dreams and our ambitions?
Surrender our plans and our future?
Surrender our wants and our desires?

Do we really want to surrender absolutely everything to Jesus? Every inch of who we are? Or does the hymn look more like this when compared to our everyday lives:

I surrender some
I surrender some
Some to Thee, my blessed Savior
I surrender some

It’s easy to sing a hymn that declares our surrender to Jesus. It’s much harder to do so in practice. Our journey towards surrender begins with a passionate desire to obey Christ and follow Him at any time, any place, and at any cost. And at the end of the day, that’s what Jesus really expects from all who choose to follow after Him.

It’s a life of total surrender.
It’s a life full of selflessness and self-denial.
It’s a life dedicated to His cause and His kingdom.

The Apostle Paul tells us that “[Christ] died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised” (2 Cor. 5:15, ESV). It doesn’t get any clearer than that. We were saved by Jesus so that we no longer live for ourselves but we now live for the name of Christ. We take all of who we are, lay it before Christ, and surrender every inch of our lives to Him.

Are you ready to surrender it all to Jesus? Are you prepared to live for Him and go wherever He brings you? By the power of the Spirit, let us move towards surrendering more and more of our lives to Christ every single day.

“I surrender all. I surrender all. All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all.”
