“It was much pleasanter at home," thought poor Alice, "when one wasn't always growing larger and smaller, and being ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn't gone down the rabbit-hole—and yet—and yet—it's rather curious, you know, this sort of life!”
–Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Before we continue further into our adventure, I need to give a word to the wise. We can spend all day talking about simplicity and theorizing about the different facets that make it up. All of this can be quite fascinating (at least to me!) and that’s why I started this blog about it. But at a certain point in time, we’re going to have to get our feet wet. We’re going to have to dip the big toe into the icy cold water. It’s great that we can talk about simplicity but experiencing simplicity firsthand and the resulting personal change will really be the best teacher. I hope you’ll decide to embark on the journey to simplicity. It’s for your own good. You don’t have to dive all the way in just yet. Just get your feet wet and see where it takes you.
In the 1999 movie The Matrix, Morpheus, one of the leaders of the rebellion against the machines, sought to recruit a man named Neo into his team. Morpheus informs him that he’d been living in a dream world and that the real world is actually run by machines. To join Morpheus’ team, Neo would have to be unplugged from the matrix—the dream world. In one scene, Morpheus presents Neo with two options: stay in the dream world or awaken to the real world. Morpheus says to Neo, “This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”
I think the best way to really learn about simplicity is to jump right in and to discover things for yourself. I challenge you to get your feet wet in living a simple lifestyle and see just how deep the rabbit-hole goes. I’ll be here to lead the way and provide ideas and insights in this blog. But it will be your job to take a stab at it.
Take the red pill.
